While the UK may have some excellent places to visit, the world is vast, and there are an almost endless number of other places to visit if you can find the time. If you spend your whole life in one place, you’re going to miss out on all the other exciting cultures and wondrous sights you can see. Would you like to travel somewhere different this year? Are you struggling to decide whether to trek in the Himalayas, lie on a beach in Sri Lanka or experience the wonders of China? Have you thought about looking a little closer to home because there are plenty of reasons why you should spend some time in Spain?

  1. The Food

This has got to feature at the top of the list because Spanish food is fantastic! Spain holidays aren’t complete if you don’t try the food, and the variety across the country is astounding. Even when you choose to eat at the inexpensive places, you’re still guaranteed a great meal. Dishes you should try while you’re there include paella, gazpacho, pata negra and of course let’s not forget the famous tapas.

  1. Breathtaking Landscapes

Spain is probably best known for its coastline and beaches, but there’s far more for you to see if you love experiencing different landscapes. There are majestic mountains, a volcano, and even a desert. When you’ve had enough of soaking up the views, there are a variety of adventure activities you can take part in. Scuba diving, skiing, snowboarding, and hiking as well as annual surfing competitions.

  1. Rich History

Spain has gone through some turbulent times, which makes its history fascinating. Wherever you go in the country, you can see influences from many of the different cultures that have called Spain their home over the years.

  1. Interesting Language

Did you realise that Spanish is the second language for many Spaniards? There are several different regional languages that locals prefer to speak.

  1. Spanish Festivals and Fiestas

Spanish people love to party, and you’ll find celebrations of various kinds taking place throughout the year. Some festivals that take place are a little unusual, to say the least. One of the most famous that springs to mind is La Tomatina, the tomato throwing festival that takes place in Buñol.

  1. Beautiful Beaches

Many people visit Spain because of the beaches, which is not surprising as there is almost 5,000 km of coastline. Thanks to the glorious weather, it doesn’t matter what time of the year you visit.

  1. Glorious Weather

The weather in Spain is nothing like you’re used to if you come from the UK. If you want to experience the sun, then this is the place to go. Recent research is showing that a healthy dose of sunshine can be very beneficial thanks to Vitamin D the sun gives. As well as being good for your health, there’s no denying how much better and happier you feel when the sun’s shining. April and May are the best times to visit. Leave it any later in the year and it might be too hot to go out during the day time.

  1. UNESCO World Heritage Sites

UNESCO has a high opinion of Spain, and there are 45 World Heritage Sites across the country. You’ll have to explore a few of them if you’ve got the time. Check out the ancient cave paintings of Altamira or the route taken by pilgrims known as the Santiago de Compostela.

  1. Mediterranean Lifestyle

The Spanish are well known for their laid-back approach to life. You must have heard about daily siestas, long lunches and Sunday snoozes. Life in Spain is most definitely enjoyed at a completely different pace. It can take a while to get used to it, but after a few days, you’ll be wanting to introduce such customs when you get back to the UK.

  1. Football

This is not something that’s going to appeal to everyone but when your partner is laying next to the pool in your luxury holiday villa, take yourself off and worship at the altar of football. Spain is home to two of the world’s best teams, and even if you’re more of a Manchester United or Liverpool fan, you shouldn’t turn down the opportunity to watch a football match if you can.

One last reason worth mentioning is the friendliness of the Spanish people. Most are very friendly towards visitors and will go out of their way to help you.
